Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) at HCJS

We aim to:

  • Develop LOtC as an entitlement for our pupils.

  • Deliver a wide range of progressive and frequent LOtC activities for all our pupils.

  • Further improve our high quality curriculum provision through LOtC experiences.

  • Ensure that opportunities are cross curricular (across a range of subjects), enabling all pupils to reach their full potential through the experiences offered to them.

It is our strong belief that frequent and progressive opportunities to learn outside the classroom develops a range of experiences, ideas and skills, whatever the age or ability.

At HCJS, we are incredibly lucky to have many areas and habitats within our school grounds which we can use for LOtC, including (among others): woodland, a meadow, a pond and wildlife area, an orchard, sensory flower beds and a greenhouse with planting area.

In addition to the exciting activities we can provide on site, building strong links within the local community is invaluable in helping to create additional experiences to take our pupils beyond our school and grounds. We believe that understanding can truly be embedded when learning takes place in a real-life context; confidence, independence and self-awareness is developed and there is increased motivation and willingness to learn.
