Mr Nick Battersby is the PE Coordinator at HCJS. If you have any questions about our PE or Sport provision , please contact him via the main school office.
All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system.
Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.
The PE and sport premium, which was first introduced in 2013 is provided to help primary schools achieve this aim. Nationally, £320m of government funding has been allocated to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport. We have the flexibility to use it in the way that works best for our pupils.
PE and Sport at HCJS
At Haddenham Community Junior School, we are committed to the provision of a balanced program of Physical Education for all our pupils. We ensure the opportunities offered to all children during their time with us, gives the chance to develop their sportsmanship as well their skill and fitness levels. We also aim to provide a broad and diverse range of activities which we hope will enable all children to identify some kind of physical activity they enjoy; this will we hope mean they are likely to want to continue with it beyond the school day and after leaving our school. To do this we offer a broad range of sports and activities across our curriculum as well as at playtimes, lunchtimes and after school.
We also encourage children to develop the resilience and tenacity that is required to succeed in PE and sports within a safe and controlled environment; these are also skills that children need to succeed in the wider school curriculum (and in real life when they leave school).
We are members of several inter-school networks which enable us to access a great deal of friendly competition: we are members of the Mandeville School Sports partnership, we compete in two boy's and one girl's football league, a netball league and a wide range of other competitions within our sports partnership. We are members of the Aylesbury Vale Primary School Athletics Association (AVPSAA) and compete in district wide events.
Our use of the PE and sport premium.
In 2022/23 we used the PE and Sports premium as follows:
-
Fund membership of our two main sports networks; The Stoke Mandeville School Sports Partnership and the Haddenham Area School Sports Partnership - both of these networks give our pupils access to inter-school competitive events, fixtures and festivals in a wide variety of sports and activities.
-
Fund PE focused staff training for our teachers and teaching assistants from the local authority and outside providers including swimming training.
-
To fund the transport costs of coaches and buses for children attending festivals and events.
-
To buy in the services of outside sports clubs and organisations to coach children and staff providing high quality PE and professional development for teachers and teaching assistants. This is not used as PPA time or cover.
-
To purchase a variety of high quality equipment and resources to encourage our pupils to try a wide range of sports and activities.
